Underwater FAQs
I’m not sure how to pose underwater. Will you help me?
I promise everyone feels this way! All sessions include underwater coaching and posing assistance before we start shooting. I won't throw you in the deep end and yell swim. You will have plenty of time to acclimate to the water and practice.
Can you photograph groups underwater?
These sessions are best for 1-2 people. There are so many elements that need to come together for a successful image that it’s almost impossible to coordinate with larger groups. Distortion also becomes an issue and anyone on the outer edges of the image will have very wonky looking limbs.
Is there an age limit?
In general, participants should be at least 12 years old and STRONG SWIMMERS. Exceptions can be made on a case by case basis.
I can swim well, but don’t really like putting my face in the water. Can we do a session?
A huge part of a beautiful underwater image is serenity. A model must be able to not only put their face underwater, but keep a relaxed expression. Also, once the model is submerged, it takes a few seconds for the water to settle and bubbles to disappear, so they need to stay underwater long enough to set up the shot.
How long should I be able to hold my breath?
I’ve noticed as the sessions progress and the models become more comfortable underwater, they are able to stay under for longer periods of time. The hardest part is letting the air out of your lungs so you aren't fighting the sensation to float to the surface. It takes about 5-10 seconds after that for the water to settle. The longer you can stay under from that point on, the more shots we can get per dip. Safety is always the priority though. If you can only stay under for 10 seconds, that's enough.
What if I want to practice more before the session because I’m super committed to creating amazing artwork?
If you want additional practice on your own, find a clean, safe pool. Practice exhaling before submerging so you sink towards the bottom. Once you're underwater, stay calm and use slow controlled movements. This is a great time to practice some meditation techniques and focus on relaxing your face and body underwater. Most people get plenty of practice in the coaching session and are ready to start shooting, but it never hurts to be prepared!
How many pictures will be in my proof gallery?
Given the nature of underwater photography, every session is different. It will seem like we take a TON of pictures, but I will carefully go through all of them and provide you with the best shots from each dip. The proof gallery images will have the correct poses, timing, reflections, lighting, etc, but they will be unedited images. Most clients have 10-15 images to choose from for every hour that we shoot.
